Permits and rules

Broward County's Building Code Division provides permitting, code compliance and enforcement to the Broward Municipal Services District and Fort Lauderdale International Airport. It also handles contractor licensing and enforcement.

As one local example, the City of Coral Springs publishes a Garage Door Permit Application Checklist (form 051.0). It lists a building permit application, a site plan, product approvals, job value documentation and, if the job value exceeds $5,000, a Notice of Commencement.

The Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023) took effect December 31, 2023. Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals Formal Interpretation #24, dated January 9, 2025, covers retrofit of windows, doors, garage doors and shutters for detached one- and two-family dwellings. It lists design pressure values for overhead garage doors, for example 38.6 positive and -48.2 negative for an 8-by-8 door.

The county's contractor licensing packet lists 'Garage Door Installation' among its specialty contractor categories.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to open a door with a broken spring?

It's best not to. Without a working spring, the door's full weight rests on the opener or on you, and it can drop suddenly. Leave it closed if you can and call for help.

Should both springs be replaced?

Doors with two springs usually have springs of the same age, so when one breaks the other may not be far behind. Your provider can tell you whether replacing both makes sense.

Who will come to my home?

An independent garage door provider who serves Plantation (33388). Main Street Garage Door Repair connects you; the provider does the work and sets the price.

Do I pay for the call?

No. The call and the referral are free. You only pay the provider if you hire them.
