A broken spring is a common garage door repair, and the cost is usually the first question. Prices vary, so treat the figures below as a rough guide, not a quote.
Typical costs
Two published cost guides give different ranges:
- This Old House's 2026 cost guide puts a typical replacement at $300 to $540, averaging $420. It lists $300 to $400 for extension springs and $350 to $540 for torsion springs, installed.
- HomeAdvisor's cost guide gives an average of $250 and a normal range of $150 to $350. It lists $75 to $150 per torsion spring and $50 to $100 per extension spring, labor included.
The two don't agree, which shows how much prices differ from one provider and one door to the next.
What changes the price
- Spring type. Torsion springs are wound around a metal shaft above the door. Extension springs are the other common type. HomeAdvisor lists switching from extension to torsion springs at $400 to $800.
- One spring or two. DASMA, the garage door manufacturers' trade association, says that if your door has two springs, replace both, even if only one is broken. Your bill may cover a pair.
- Other worn parts. A broken spring can come with worn cables. HomeAdvisor lists cable replacement at $75 to $200. This Old House lists $170 to $320.
- Timing. HomeAdvisor says emergency and after-hours calls carry extra fees.
Don't try it yourself to save money
DASMA says spring systems are dangerous and should be repaired only by trained professionals. The springs are under high tension and can cause serious injury. Both This Old House and HomeAdvisor also advise hiring a technician.
Questions to ask a provider
- Is the price for one spring or both?

- Is there an extra fee for evening, weekend or same-day service?
- Will you check the cables, rollers and balance, and what would a repair cost if they need work?
- Is there a warranty on the parts and the work?
- Can you give me the total before work begins?
What happens when you call
