When a door is badly dented, warped, or too worn to keep repairing, replacing it may make more sense than another repair. Prices vary a lot, so it helps to know the ranges before you call.
Typical costs
Cost surveys give different numbers, so treat each one as a rough guide.
- This Old House, using Homewyse data updated in March 2026, puts a new door at $1,151 to $1,869, about $1,400 on average.
- Bob Vila, citing Angi data from May 2024, gives a national average of $2,500 and a range of $1,500 to $6,000.
- Fixr's January 2025 guide puts an installed double door (16 by 7 feet) at $1,175 to $4,075.
What changes the price
- Size. In This Old House's figures, a two-car door ($2,186 to $3,348) costs about twice a one-car door ($1,093 to $1,674).
- Material. The same source lists steel at $1,093 to $1,288 and wood at $1,674 to $1,869. Glass runs from $1,800 to $6,070.
- Insulation. Angi's figures, as reported by Bob Vila, show insulation adding $200 to $600. Fixr gives about $600 for a steel door rated R-8 and about $1,000 for R-16.
- Extras. Bob Vila lists $50 to $200 to remove the old door and $220 to $520 to install a new opener.
- Tracks. DASMA, the garage door trade association, says old tracks may not fit a new door. The tracks and door sections work together as a system.
Wind-rated doors
Fixr notes that many high-wind states, Florida among them, have wind-load rules for garage doors. DASMA says Florida's code has required new and replacement doors to be reinforced since 2002, with extra bracing, heavier track and other hardware. It also reports that required ratings differed by county.
None of the cost guides above gives a separate price for a wind-rated door. Ask for it as its own line on the quote.
Questions to ask a provider
- Does the price include installation, new tracks and hardware, and removing the old door?
- What wind rating does my local building code require, and does this door meet it?
- What insulation level is included?
- Can I have the price in writing, with each item listed?
Don't install a door yourself. DASMA says it can be very dangerous and is not recommended for a novice.
