Dames Point BridgeDuval County had 995,567 residents in the April 1, 2020 Census, and the Census Bureau estimated 1,062,963 for July 1, 2025. Jacksonville is the county's largest city, with 949,611 people in 2020.
The Legislative Council of the Territory of Florida created the county on August 12, 1822. It was named for General William P. Duval, the first civil governor of the Territory, and Jacksonville was designated the county seat. The City of Jacksonville states that it consolidated in 1968.
The 2024 American Community Survey 1-year estimate counts 473,580 housing units in the county. Of these, 276,556 are single-family detached homes (about 58 percent) and 29,603 are single-family attached. About 20.6 percent of units (97,580) were built in 2010 or later, and 16.6 percent were built in 1959 or earlier.
Common problems
- Broken spring. You may hear a loud bang from the garage, then find the door too heavy to lift. Springs hold the door's weight under high tension, so replacing them is a job for a trained technician.
- Snapped or loose cable. The door hangs crooked or one side drops. Cables work with the springs, so they're often damaged together.
- Door off its track. Rollers come out of the track after a bump or a worn part, and the door jams partway.
- Opener problems. The motor hums but the door doesn't move, the remote stops working, or the door reverses before it closes. Dirty or misaligned safety sensors are a common cause.
- Storm damage. Strong wind can bend panels, push a door out of its tracks or leave it unable to close securely.

Permits and rules
The City of Jacksonville Building Inspection Division, at 214 North Hogan Street (904-255-8500), enforces the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023), and takes permit applications online through JaxEPICS. The 9th Edition (2026) takes effect December 31, 2026, and the state product approval process for it began July 1, 2026.
Two city forms ask about products:
- The Window and Door Replacement Worksheet (revised 4/3/2026) has a Garage Doors table. It asks for number of units, area in sq. ft., manufacturer, model number, end-zone and interior-zone pressure (product DP +/-), and the Florida Product Approval number including suffix.
- The Product Approval Information Sheet (revised 4/9/2026) has the contractor supply the manufacturer, product description, code version, FL number with suffix and quality-assurance expiration date. The contractor keeps the manufacturer's printed instructions on the job site for the inspector.
The Jacksonville Construction Trades Qualifying Board lists trades such as general building, roofing, electrical and plumbing, with no garage door category.
What affects the cost

Prices vary by provider, so ask for a quote before any work starts. What usually affects the price:
- Which part failed, and whether related parts, like the second spring or the cables, should be replaced at the same time
- The size and weight of the door
- Repairing the door versus replacing it, and the new door's material and insulation
- Wind-rated or impact-rated doors, and any permit the job needs
- Same-day, night or weekend service
What happens when you call

- You talk with the provider directly about the problem, timing and price before any work starts.
Main Street Garage Door Repair doesn't charge you for the referral. The provider sets their own prices and does the work. Calls are recorded for quality and billing.

Questions people ask
Is it safe to open a door with a broken spring?
It's best not to. Without a working spring, the door's full weight rests on the opener or on you, and it can drop suddenly. Leave it closed if you can and call for help.
Should both springs be replaced?
Doors with two springs usually have springs of the same age, so when one breaks the other may not be far behind. Your provider can tell you whether replacing both makes sense.
Who will come to my home?
An independent garage door provider who serves Jacksonville Beach (32250). Main Street Garage Door Repair connects you; the provider does the work and sets the price.
Do I pay for the call?
No. The call and the referral are free. You only pay the provider if you hire them.
