Main Street Bridge, JacksonvilleThe governments of the City of Jacksonville and Duval County were consolidated in 1968. The City of Jacksonville describes itself as the largest city in area in the continental United States.
For population, HUD's Jacksonville Comprehensive Housing Market Analysis cites a Census Bureau estimate of 971,315 residents for the City of Jacksonville as of July 1, 2022. That figure is an estimate, not a count.
Common problems
- Broken spring. You may hear a loud bang from the garage, then find the door too heavy to lift. Springs hold the door's weight under high tension, so replacing them is a job for a trained technician.
- Snapped or loose cable. The door hangs crooked or one side drops. Cables work with the springs, so they're often damaged together.
- Door off its track. Rollers come out of the track after a bump or a worn part, and the door jams partway.
- Opener problems. The motor hums but the door doesn't move, the remote stops working, or the door reverses before it closes. Dirty or misaligned safety sensors are a common cause.
- Storm damage. Strong wind can bend panels, push a door out of its tracks or leave it unable to close securely.

Permits and rules
The City of Jacksonville Building Inspection Division enforces the Florida Building Code and takes permit submissions online through JaxEPICS. It applies the Florida Building Code 8th Edition (2023) to permits submitted after January 1, 2024.
The city's Window and Door Replacement Worksheet has a garage-door section. It asks for number of units, area in sq. ft., manufacturer and model number, end-zone and interior-zone pressure (product DP +/-) and the product approval number including suffix. The owner completes the worksheet, and licensed contractors complete the Specs tab of the JaxEPICS permit. The city's Product Approval Information Sheet also lists sectional and roll-up exterior doors among items needing Florida product approval numbers.
Under Chapter 2026-63 (HB 803, effective July 1, 2026), a single-family owner or the owner's contractor is exempt from a building permit for work valued under $7,500 on written request with a copy of the contract. Flood hazard area work and electrical, plumbing, structural, mechanical or gas work are excepted.
What affects the cost

Prices vary by provider, so ask for a quote before any work starts. What usually affects the price:
- Which part failed, and whether related parts, like the second spring or the cables, should be replaced at the same time
- The size and weight of the door
- Repairing the door versus replacing it, and the new door's material and insulation
- Wind-rated or impact-rated doors, and any permit the job needs
- Same-day, night or weekend service

Questions people ask
Is it safe to open a door with a broken spring?
It's best not to. Without a working spring, the door's full weight rests on the opener or on you, and it can drop suddenly. Leave it closed if you can and call for help.
Should both springs be replaced?
Doors with two springs usually have springs of the same age, so when one breaks the other may not be far behind. Your provider can tell you whether replacing both makes sense.
Who will come to my home?
An independent garage door provider who serves Jacksonville (32214). Main Street Garage Door Repair connects you; the provider does the work and sets the price.
Do I pay for the call?
No. The call and the referral are free. You only pay the provider if you hire them.
